Certain medicines may produce constipation and if possible these medicines can be stopped and alternative medicine which do not produce constipation may be given. If details of the medicines you are taking are known i may be in a position to look into this aspect. If you are suffering from constipation for a long period bulk-forming laxative such as psyllium hydrophilic mucilliod and calcium polycarbophil are the safest and they rarely cause serious side effects. They resemble natural dietary fiber.

If you are suffering from acute constipation bisacodyl in tablet form or rectal suppository form can be used. This medicine can cause abdominal cramping and significant electrolyte and fluid. For this reason the use of this drug should be limited to the short-term treatment of consipation.
