How To Rule Out Depression?

I was wondering if it would be helpful to see a psychiatrist when I am not experiencing any symptoms or if I should wait till I am experiencing symptoms? I have has a friend tell me twice now, once in June and second a last week I should probably see someone. They have personal experience (they themselves) with what we both think what might be happening with me. Possible depression but it doesn't affect me the majority of the time but when it does, I can still work, not quite as productive, but I get very, very emotional (very out of character with me because I am a laid back, quite individual). Thanks.

Dear
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns

I went through your details. Depression is a neuro chemical disorder and is supposed to be chronic. The symptoms may come and go or continue to be there. There may not be any symptoms at all for months together. The symptoms may be present continuously for months. Altogether, as I already told, depression is a chronic disorder which need prolonged treatment.

I am not explaining the symptoms of depression here because you can get those in internet. I suggest you to go through those symptom list. Do not be obsessive. Be critical with symptom list. Read two or three websites and come to a conclusion.

You should be able to distinguish the difference between depression and disappointment. Disappointment also manifests similar depression symptoms, but these symptoms are not chronic. These disappointment symptoms vanish after some days.

If you find that you have some depressive disorder symptoms, you should consult a psychologist for screening assessment. Diagnosis should be done by expert with the help of screening questionnaire. After that, the psychologist will provide you with the treatment guidelines. Clinical depression is a neurochemical disorder. Clinical depression is usually treated with a combination of psychiatric medicines, psychotherapy, life style changes, meditation and exercise.
