I had a complete thyroidectomy in 2001. My tsh is 0.010 - free t4 1.8 t3 95. Every doctor I see wants to lower my synthroid from current dose of 100msg. My former endocrinologist did that down to 77msg and I could not function. How do they expect me to function when I do not have a thyroid?
Hello! Thank you for asking on HCM! I read your query and understand your concern. You are right, after total thyroidectomy the levothyroxine doses in general are high (>100 mcg/day) but there are exceptions. It depends also by the weight and you should be sure that total and not partial thyroidectomy is done. We decide the dose only in basis of the the hormonal level, because the symptoms are often discrete. You have to lower the dose because actually are in hyperthyroidism that can be harmful for the organism. Hope the information will help. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
