Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 18 been on 30mg of adderal xr for two yrs helped great focus for school now he s starting college he has dr apt tomorrow and wants off the adderal he says makes him depressed he doesn t have ADHD he has add would you suggest focalin or concerta something with less side effects he hates taking it
He might have already outgrew his problem. instead of switching to a different medications as a general physician I would recommend stopping the Adderal altogether.
When you want to stop the adderal, do it gradually. Please do not stop all at once. Even prior to the cessation of medication you should start counseling him. Your son is at a age can understand. Counselling him to concentrate will certainly helps. You can also engage him in certain tasks which requires some focus. encourage him to participate in tasks like painting or leaning music etc. The tasks which he likes but also needs concentration.
good luck
