Hello and welcome to Healthcare magic. Glad to see that you are very much interested in the mental health of someone close to you.
Your first query:
Alcohol dependence is best treated by getting a patient admitted, following which he is started on medications for restoring his health, his
liver function and finally medicines that will prevent further craving to alcohol once discharged. The
psychiatrist will also like to look for the possibility of an underlying psychiatric abnormality if any, that can be a cause of heavy drinking. During admission the psychiatrist will also check his blood for how his liver function is, and if needed looks for possible damage in
ultrasound scan. This is along with sufficient
counselling to enhance his motivation.
Your second question: Yes it can be successfully cured provided the patient will see the psychiatrist and continue medications and counseling as long as he is advised.
Your third question: There is no one such as "best addiction psychiatrist". Any hospital where a good team of qualified psychiatrist and
psychologist is available who are ready to listen to the patient empathetically and win his confidence is all that is needed.
If he was my patient I would recommend him to do basic investigations like (BRE)Blood Routine, LFT and
TSH.
Hope I have answered your queries. Feel free to write if you need further clarifications. May he get well soon.
