Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking one 5mg tablet of Valium at night following back surgery 2 months ago. It seems to help prevent muscle spasms. I haven't had any issues with taking it, as far as I can tell. Will I become addicted? Should I taper off it? There seems to be lots of horror stories on line about addiction and withdrawal problems with Valium, although most seem to be taking multiple dosages per day.
You have been taking Valium 5 mg since last 2 months. Valium is Diazepam and the drug is a benzodiazepine drug. This drug is known to cause dependence and development of tolerance. It has high abuse potential. So I would advise you to not to take the drug for prolonged period of time. Sudden stoppage of drug after continuous use is not advised. I would advise you to gradually taper the doses of drug to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal at this dose will be mild in form of insomnia, restlessness, agitation, tremors, brain fog, dizziness etc symptoms. Consult your psychiatrist for gradual dose reductions.
Thanks, hope this helps you.
