Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I hit the front of my shin bone with the weighted metal end of a hurdle two months ago and developed a bruise and lump. The bruise didn t look that bad and went away within a week, the lump however is still there. It is about the size of a quarter and there is now an indentation right above the lump on my leg. The lump has begun to hurt when I run (similar to shin splint pain). Is there anything I can do other than ice? Should I attempt to massage the lump out? (it hurts to put pressure on) Thanks
From your explanation, it looks like a hematoma that appears to be infected or putting pressure over the terminal nerve endings.
A hematoma is a harmless tumour-like mass formed due to spillage of blood from ruptured blood vessels leading to accumulation of blood into the soft tissues forming a lump.
At times the hematoma gets localized and encapsulated and forms a firm hard lump that can take a long time, say a few months to resolve, but it generally tends to resolve itself.
As in your case also the lump seems to be due to a firm hematoma and you need not worry as it will resolve gradually.
You should do alternate warm and cool compresses over the lump. Apply Heparin gel as it helps in the faster disintegration of the hematoma.

How To Treat A Painful Lump Around The Shin?
Hi, From your explanation, it looks like a hematoma that appears to be infected or putting pressure over the terminal nerve endings.
