How To Treat A Popping Ear?

Hello, i have had an extremely annoying problem with my ears and my throat. A few months ago, i started to notice a very loud popping in my left ear whenever i swallowed, louder than chewing a chip. Nobody else can hear it but me, and at the same time this happened, i found it hard to swallow, especially without making weird noises sometimes. This is going to be hard to explain, but whenever i am aware of the swallowing part, i try to not make noise if i am in a quiet place, such as a classroom, but when i try to avoid making noise, i make noise. When i look in a mirror and open my mouth, i can noticeably watch my jaw shift to the left, the same side of my ear that pops. I have gone to the doctors, and they have pressed pressure points along my head, and only the right side of my heads hurts. It is driving me crazy, and i can't just forget. I think if i can fix the swallowing part, my ears will fix. My doctor has given me a night guard to prevent clenching, which i do not do, and fluonase, but neither has worked over 3 months. Urgent!!

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Popping/clicking sound in the ear along with mandible shifting to one side while mouth opening are characteristic signs that you are having a disorder associated with the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) and not the ear.

The disorders can include subluxation of the joint on one side, degeneration of the joint or ankylosis. For confirmed diagnosis, you should visit an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for the clinical examination of the joint and go for investigations such as x-ray and CT Scan. Based on the test results, diagnosis can be made and treatment can be decided.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
