How To Treat A Sting From Wasp?

my son was stung by a wasp on saturday he did not have a allergic reaction but it is still swollen and red we sent him to school but the nurse sent him home saying he may need a steroid shot because he may be having a allergic reaction but wouldn't that have happened right away i was told that the swelling could last up to a week and he is feeling fine besides it being swollen and alittle pain on the finger that was stung i am out of work with no insurance so i would have to take him to the emergency room for treatment and i don't want to have to do that if i don't have to is the school nurse over reacting we have been treating it with peroxide and ice and a product called sting kill it is for insect bites and stings can you please help me

Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Swelling and redness itself is due to reaction or allergy to sting. But it can be treated with antihistamines for swelling along with analgesics for pain .If it is small and not increasing in size , it can be managed without steroids shot.

You also need to rule out secondary bacterial infection if swelling and pain are increasing ,otherwise if it is improving , it will resolve in 5-7 days.
