How To Treat A Torn Tonsil And The Dangling Gag Reflex Thus Caused?

I have a torn tonsil, went to the ER. They placed me on an an antibiotic and anti inflammatory . They told me to contact the ENT specialist in one week. They could not answer why this happened. Haven't eaten sharp foods or anything like that. I do normally have real meaty large tonsils and get white chunks and blood on occasion for a few years now. The split is dangling hitting my gag reflex and making swollowing difficult. The piece is larger then a quarter just dangling. Should I call ENT sooner?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have torn tonsil and the dangling gag reflex thus caused . It occurs due to many reasons but untreated upper respiratory tract infection is most common reason for tonsillitis. You should not ignore it as the can get complicated . Some times untreated tonsillitis make tonsils to burst and the tonsillectomy will be the only option left. I would suggest you to do warm saline rinses several times a day. Take ibuprofen ( if not allergic ) or tylenol for pain and swelling . Take benadryl twice a day . Consult ENT specialist for proper examination. Doctor may order blood test or throat swab test to confirm the diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe broad spectrum antibiotics like amoxicillin for at least two weeks. Doctor may also refer you to gastroenterologist for gag reflex . For now try to have liquid diet .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
