Contraction (tightening) of the
Piriformis muscle causes compression over the nerves of legs.
Try to avoid the posture (sitting and lying) which triggers the problems. This is achieved by trial and error method.
Other conservative management includes rest, ice/heat compresses.
Further, use of anti-inflammatory drugs (such as,
ibuprofen) + muscle relaxants (such as
Chlorzoxazone) may relieve the symptoms.
Alternatively, if there is no relief, local injections of
steroids,
anesthetic agents or Botox into the muscle are helpful in relieving the stretched muscle and thereby decompress the nerves.
Surgery may be required as a last resort.
