How To Treat Bruise On Leg ,knee And Ankle?

I bruised my front leg halfway between knee & ankle about ten yrs ago and it has brownish spots...About three months ago I noticed a reddening below it and it ran several inches to a thickening/raised spot aabove my ankle. It is tender to touch. What could this be?
