Hi,

I can understand your concern regarding tour son-in law. Before I go on to answer your query, I would like to say that it would have been better had you provided what were the exact symptoms that your son in law was suffering from.

Depression is generally a chronic disorder. One reason why the depression is recurring after few months is that may be the medications are stopped. Currently, many safe and effective medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are available. The point to remember is that the medications are slow to act and you will have to be patient about the response. In addition, the medications has to be continued for months to years depending on number and duration of previous episodes. In general, if it is 1st episode, it has to be continued for 6-9 months, and this duration increases considerably if there are more than one episode. You can discuss these issues with the treating psychiatrist who will guide you further.

Hope the information was helpful. Best wishes.
