How To Treat Discolouration Of Lip In Smoker?

Hi I am an African 31 years of age who has been a smoker for a number of years. I have noticed I have discolouration of my lower lip. My lips are not generally dark, however I have area where the my lip has a lighter shade of pink ( close to the colour of the inside of the mouth) . Could you please let me know if this is reversible or if there is any medication to sort this out. Thanks

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,

I can understand your concern for the lip pigmentation after smoking.
It is quite common in smoker to get darkened lips due to nicotine as well as the heat of the smoke during smoking.

I suggest my patients to apply a cream containing Kojic acid or Licorice extract at night time. It takes around 8-12 weeks to see the results.
A sunscreen lip balm can be applied to prevent the further darkening. Eat healthy diet containing lot of vitamins and minerals.

All the best.
