How To Treat Drop In Platelet Count From 207K To 24K And 45K(manual Count)?
I am in mumbai region india My mother aged 8 was diagnose with Dengue NS1 positive Aug 27. ELISA Igm was negative she is hospitalised in a reputed hospital doing well since then. Hardly any dengue symptoms - no rash, no bleeding (till Sept 1) nothing of significance except low grade intermittent fever first 2 days She did also have bacteria in urine (this is recurrent after sepsis 2 years ago) which has dissappeared within 3 days since admission. Platelets dropped from 207K to 24 K (MACHINE COUNT) 45k MANUAL COUNT) in 5 days (Aug 30 evening) and she was transfused with 8 packs (RDP) but no significant increase. they have not given 232 ml SDP (platelet count post SDF transfusion not yet taken). ELISA IgM positive on Aug 30 My question She still has no symptoms and doing well Does IgM Positive (antibodies) mean she is improving When can we expect (typically) an increase in platelet count
Hello, I understand your concern for your mother. Low platelet count is one of the well known complications of Dengue and it can be related to multiple mechanisms including the antibody to the virus attacking the platelets to which the viral antigen is attached. This usually resolves in a week's time. As long as there is no bleeding, there is no need to worry.
Wish her an uneventful recovery. Dr. Noble Zachariah
