How To Treat Hypothyroid?

Hi, my son is 20 years old. At 19 he had gall stones and had the gall bladder removed. I thought he was unwell before this happened and he is worse since. He shows all symptoms of hypothyroid. I am hypothyroid and take thyroxine and T3. Is it possible that he was hypothyroid before the formation of the stones?

Thank you

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hi,

I can understand your concern regarding to your son's health. If he has the symptoms of hypothyroidism and has a positive family history for Hashimoto thyroiditis, he should check the thyroid hormones (TSH, FT4 and FT3) to confirm the under active thyroid.

I do not think that hypothyroidism has been present prior to the intervention because the thyroid hormones are checked from the anesthesiologist always before a surgical procedure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best wishes,
Dr. Mirjeta
