my 4 year old daughter hit her nose, it is really swollen! She is breathing through it but it does sound a little stuffy. She keeps complaining about loud noises, noises that don t seem loud to me at all and aren t normally loud for her. Should I take her in to the dr or wait for the swelling to go down?
Hi, swelling on nose post trauma is usually significant especially in children and subsides on its own with time. Stuffiness can be because of edema or can also be because of a break in bone of nasal dorsum or septum and can lead to prolonged stuffiness. Trauma to nose can also lead to hematoma formation in the nasal septum and can lead to bilateral stuffiness. This is a significant thing and should be urgently treated as delay can lead to cosmetic deformity. Loud sound like feeling can be because of stuffiness of nose and child may feel own voice as different than previous or the surrounding sound can also appear louder. So if you think that the trauma was severe and edema is more, you please take her to an ENT, otherwise you can wait for a day or two. Give child some analgesic like paracetamol and ibuprofen and use xylometazoline nasal drops for few days. Regards
