Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hai! I am a 30 year old lady and I am 5.6 feet height and over 80 kgs weight. i have been prescribed to take femilon and i am on this medication since 2009 and I started it because, i had heavy bleeding. But now i want to stop taking this tablet. Is it ok to stop it? Will my periods be normal when I stop it?
Femilon contains both ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses. A woman can stop taking this medication at any point and there is no requirement to wean yourself off hormonal birth control pills. But stop taking this medication suddenly may cause some symptoms like irregular periods, spotting or breakthrough bleeding, cramps etc.
These symptoms are self-limiting and mild. Usually within 4 weeks after stop taking this medication, normal menstrual cycle may start again. But in some cases, menstrual cycles may resume within 3 months after stop taking this medication.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
