Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I Am Underweight. I Eat Lots Of Healthy Food. Should I See A Doctor?
Hi, I am a male 23 and 5" 10 taller, and the recent weight I measured was 54 Kg. So, the problem with me is that I am too skinny and according to my height I am too underweight at least it should be 63-65 KG something. I don't think the problem could be with my nutrition. Since, I eat a lot, of healthy food. My day starts with regular pushups, sqats, and ab crunches at home. After this work-out I consume a two full glass of banana shake a day. After that breakfast with at least two sandwiches or a bowl full of cornflakes. Twice daily meal and yes some season fruits, too. I didn't prefer oily and fast-foods. That's a basic idea of what do I eat. I need to know what could be the problem? is there any malfunction in my body that stops me in gaining weight? should I visit any doctor? for what kind of checkup if you would suggest any?
Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
After going through your history it is true that you are under weight for your height, and you are taking good diet and exercise also.
The weight gain depends on calories intake and calories you burn and your metabolic rate and also on positive nitrogen balance.
You need to plan diet with high calories and proteins you can take 4 to 5 meals per day and you can take advice from Dietitian for diet and continue your work out as exercise is necessary to gain weight which is lean weight that is muscle and not fats.
You can certainly visit Physician and after examination if required investigation and treatment can be planned. If everything is fine.
You may require Proteins, vitamins and micronutrients to help metabolism and gain weight.
Even short chain fatty acids which are very good source of energy may be given helps to gain weight.
You will gain weight , Take care
Good Luck.
Gaining weight can be equally an ordeal as reducing weight! It is good to start your day with exercise. Weight training help to develop muscle mass. As per your diet i don't think so there is anything wrong with. However you could talk to your doctor and dietitian. It is good to know you don't like oily food... eating oily food is not the solution to gain weight.
Eat a small frequent nutritious meal throughout the day for 6-7 times. You've not mentioned if you are a vegetarian or meat eater. You can continue to drink fruit blended either with yogurt or milk. Breakfast can be omelette/ egg sandwich/ dal parantha/ cereal with milk etc lunch can be brown rice with dal/ lean meat/ boiled green gram sprouts, vegetables, fruits, yogurt, fruit etc Dinner can be brown rice/roti with dal or lean protien with fruit. For snacking consider having peanut brittle/almonds and other nuts/fruit smoothie/dry fruit milkshake/ dates/lassie/sandwich/ boiled grams etc. You could also use some protein supplement by consulting your doctor and dietitian. Drink at-least 8 lts of water and try to be stress hardy.
Thanks
Weight is like bank account. The account grows when you withdraw less (Cut down unnecessary physical work) and you deposit more (eat more).
If you are eating well, disproportionately severe exercise may be the cause.
If that is not, you must see a Physician / need investigations to exclude diabetes, Thyroid, malignancy and on on
Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
you are working out so that keeps your bmr high, therefore what ever you eat you are able to burn it up, also you are just 23yrs ,now you will start putting on weight. do not worry you do not have any problem, it is difficult to lose weight and also it is difficult to gain weight.you should increase your protein intake if your non veg well an good ,but i am assuming your veg so your can take paneer, mushroom , soya bean, eat lot of daal.
