Do you also have diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure? Medicines for these conditions can cause dry cough. You may take a cough suppressant like dextromethorphan or codiene. Do not have Expectorant cough mixtures which may worsen dry cough. You may also have a blood test to rule out eosinophilia (AEC- Absolute Eosinophil Count) in addition to a Hemogram. You may also have a Chest X-ray and PFTs (Pulmonary Function Tests) to rule out airway diseases or a foreign body. Smoking worsens cough, hence avoid exposure to tobacco smoke. Allergy, Post-Infection Hyper-reactive Airway and GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) also cause dry cough. If these causes are ruled out, try home remedies such as soothing warm gargles, fresh cream +honey + ginger and turmeric in hot milk.
Dry cough is usually allergic.. So you can have a cough supressant like dextromethorphan, etc.. You can also have antiallergic medication like tab. cetrizine once a day at bedtime for about 3-4 days... Avoid taking codein if you are in a job or working as then you may sleep... Causes like hyper reactive airway reaction after an infection and Gastro esophagial reflux disease should aslo be rulled out... Remedies like warm saline gargles and honey with ginger+turmeric in hot milk could also help...
If the above management does not solve the issue then investigations like heamogram and AEC should be done...
Take care:-)
