In Young Age Suffered From Seizures. On Dilantin. Now Have Seizure Migraines. Cure For Symptoms?

Hello, When I was younger, I suffered from Seizures and I was on Dilantin, but now I am 50 yrs old and I suffer from Seizure Migraines, but it only occurs on the left side, and I was also treated at one time for being Bi-polar,,, can you tell me what to do about these headaches, I end up in the emergency room most of the time getting shots, and that gets to be kinda expensive and I have no Insurance. I have had eegs already and I would like to know if they to be doing them while I am having the headache, or can they do them without the headache??? I am at my wits end, and I need some kine of help..

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,
You have had past history of seizure disorder (you have not mentioned for how long you took phenytoin or if you are on treatment now) and bipolar disorder (you have not mentioned how many episodes and what were you treated with) and are currently suffering from migraine (there is no condition known as seizure migraines, there can be migraine-related seizures).

Migraine is a type of primary headache where the patient usually experiences unilateral throbbing headache with nausea and intolerability to light and sound etc. There are many more symptoms of this disorder that a qualified psychiatrist will need to evaluate you in person to diagnose it.

The treatment for it is of two types, one is acute (when the headache is occurring) and one is prophylactic (to prevent the occurrence of the headache). A person will have to take prophylactic treatment regularly in order to prevent the headaches.

EEG is electroencephelography which is done to record the electrical activity of the brain and they can be done during a seizure (not during a migraine headache) or in between seizures. Both have their respective significance.

Consult an experienced psychiatrist or neurologist for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Hope this helps,
Dr A Rao
