Infant Diagnosed With Low Hemoglobin Levels. Vomiting On Taking Vitcofol. What Should Be The Dosage?

Hello doctor, my 2.5 daughter was diagonosed with relatively low heamoglobin in blood . We were prescribed Vitcofol syrup, but we never administered it as she resisted and vomited at that time. Now her eyes have bluish ting and another doctor asked us to check her heamoglobin levels. Now she is 3.5 yrs old and weights 11.4 Kgs. Could you please let us know the dosage of Vitcofol to be administered. Thank you.

Pediatrician, Neonatology 's  Response

Iron preparations are known to cause gastro intestinal symptoms.
If your daughter"s anemia is proved to be due to iron deficiency you have to give iron.you change the brand of iron syrup if she does not tolerate vitcofol.
You can start with 5 ml twice a day after food and then gradually increase as per doctors advice. Also give iron rich food like greens, apple, egg yolk etc.All the best

Pediatrician Dr. Rajiv K Khandelwal's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

For therapeutic purposes (if the hemoglobin is low) the dose of syp. Vitcofol for your daughter is 5 ml. twice a day. It shall be better to get the hemoglobin checked to know if she is anaemic.

If your daughter does not accept syp. Vitocofol then there are other iron preparations available for use.

Hope this answer satisfies your query.

Wishing your daughter all the best...

Regards,

RKK
