Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is 17 Days Off Antabuse Sufficient To Avoid Alcohol Interactions, Given My 9-month Regimen?
I took Antabuse for 9 months — 250mg daily for the first 7 months and 125mg daily for the last two. The last dose I took was on May 27th, so today is my 17th day without it. There is a great deal or contradictory informatiom online about when it is safe to drink after stopping antabuse. In your professional opinion, have I been off the drug long enough to avoid the alcohol-antabuse interaction? If you could limit your advice to the specific question, I would appreciate it. Thank you.
Ideally, after taking treatment and being on antabuse (disulfiram) therapy for 9 months, it is not recommended to take alcohol. Because of the potential for serious reactions, it is advised to avoid alcohol in all forms if under disulfiram therapy. It is better to avoid alcohol entirely to prevent any risk of adverse reactions.
You are advised to switch to healthy lifestyle, healthy eating habits. Take health drinks & soup/juice. Antabuse or disulfiram may stay in the body for 2 (two) weeks or more (depending on the individual's lifestyle).
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
