Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have bronchitis as the result of a virus. I have been prescribed prednisone and an antibiotic, the 4th day of taking these. I take naprosyn regularly, 2 x daily for stenosis. Is it safe to take aspirin to relieve chest congestion? Is there another drug which would be better?
It is not safe to take Aspirin drug while on Prednisone drug.
Taking Aspirin or Naproxyn together with Prednisone may increase the risk of gastrointestinal tract such as inflammation, bleeding, ulceration, and rarely, perforation. However, these side effects can be prevented by taking proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole which helps in suppressing the stomach acid production.
Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain, fever and inflammation. In low doses it is used to treat or prevent heart attacks, strokes, and chest pain (angina).
However, it is not effective in the treatment of chest congestion. Your doctor will prescribe mucolytic expectorant for the relief of chest congestion.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
