Is Cardizem Advisable Instead Of Sotalol For Arrhythmia And Tachycardia?

Hello, Dr.Cardiologist! Can you compare use of two drugs of Sotalol and Сardiozem? In case the patient of 73 years has an arrhythmia and tachycardia? My new doctor cardiologist replaced sotalol with cardiozem. But I do not feel good - tachicardia increased. I did take Sotalol 80 mg / 2 times a day 10 years long. Thank you.

Hello,

Yes, it is the treatment of choice. Drugs Commonly Used to Control Ventricular Rate in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation and other arrhythmias are calcium channel blockers diltiazem (Cardizem) and verapamil.

They are quite effective for initial ventricular rate control in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Sotalol is also used to treat certain fast/irregular heartbeats (atrial fibrillation/flutter) in patients with severe symptoms such as weakness and shortness of breath.

Sotalol helps to lessen these symptoms. It slows the heart rate and helps the heart to beat more normally and regularly but Diltiazem (Cardizem) is a better option.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
