Is Cefuroxime A Fluoroquinolone?

is Cefuroxime a fluoroquinolone? My daughter had a reaction to Cipro, and I m interested in whether or not she might also react to Cefuroxime Axetil. Isn t this the brand name Keflex?I m thinking that it is not in the same family as the fluroquinolones. Is that right?

Hi,

No cefuroxime is not fluoroquinolones. If your daughter had reaction with cipro in the past you better avoid using the other drugs of fluoroqinolone group like levofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin etc. However reaction to cefuroxime axetil can also be not predictable as many antibiotics can cause allergic reaction. If she does not have any skin allergic lesion 1-2 days after using it then it will be safe.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
