Is Claritin 5mg A Safe Dosage For A Toddler?

My son will be 3 yrs old next month.. Last week his mother took him to the pediatrician for his breathing but I m not sure what his mother is talking about bc I think he breaths just fine.. But they told her to have our son try a 5mg tablet of Claritin for a month to see if that helps.. 1 is that safe for him at that dosage? 2 should he just go to a allergy specialist instead

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Claritin is anti allergic drug. 5 mg is proper dosage. But I would not prefer it to give for such a long duration. More detailed history and physical examination is needed for further advise. Best way to avoid allergies is avoiding exposure to allergen. Wash bed sheets and curtains frequently. Avoid smoke exposure to child. Do pest control in house and keep pets away from house.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
