Is Digoxin And Levothyroxine Contraindicated When Taken Together?

My grandmothers Digoxin level is 2.1. She is not symptomatic at the moment. Her TSH is 8.0 and she is on levothyroxine. I can expect for her PCP to lower her Digoxin dose and increase her Levothyroxine, correct? Do these drugs have anything to do with one another?

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern

It is observed that Levothyroxine decreases effects of Digoxine by unknown mechanism.

So, a close monitoring is necessary in such case.

If an increase in Levothyroxine dose is necessary, then Digoxin effects may be lowered even more; so a dose adjustment would be necessary.

As Digoxin level is 2.1 nmol/L, then probably a renal dysfunction should be sought and a dose reduction may be the rationale (as Digoxin is primarily eleminated through kidneys).

Hope to have been helpful! Greetings! Dr. Iliri
