Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Good morning, I have a elderly father (97 1/2) who has been taking Exlon/Rivastigmine for 10 years. He has Dementia. How long does this medication have a positive affect on a Dementia patient. Is there a point where this medication no long helps slow down this disease?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Exelon is a brand name of drug "Rivastigmine". Rivastigmine shows some response in patients with dementia and Alzheimer's disease but the results are not that much excellent. In fact, no curative treatment is available for Alzheimer's disease. It can only delay the progress of the illness.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
