Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
Finasteride is effective in males with androgenetic
alopecia and is specifically indicated for this. It is US FDA approved for this indication.
Finasteride is a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor, the enzyme which is responsible for converting testosterone to
dihydrotestosterone in hair follicles;
DHT is the main culprit behind hair loss and follicular miniaturization.
Finasteride not only slows or halts the progression of hair loss but also reverses early hair loss and thinning.
It is important to start treatment early in androgenetic alopecia to slow down the progression because it is difficult to restore the lost hair once alopecia has progressed.
Finasteride is absolutely safe and can be taken with or without food. There are no side effects except that in 1-2 % of patients there may be sexual side effects like loss of libido but this is temporary and reversible and most patients no longer report this side effect on continued treatment.
In addition to finasteride I would also suggest topical
minoxidil solution , twice daily. It is also approved in this type of alopecia.
These are prescription medications and therefore I suggest you to talk to your doctor In more details about these and also for the needful.
