Is HIDA Scan Safe During Pregnancy?

MY DAUGHTER IS 14 WEEKS PREGNANT. SHE IS HAVING NAUSEA VOMITING. HAS LOST 8+ # IN THE PAST 3 DAYS. ER VISIT 3 TIMES. TERRIBLE ABD. PAIN AND CRAMPING. CAN T EAT ANYTHING. US OF UTERUS IS NORMAL , GB US IS NORMAL. THEY ARE THINKING OF DOING A HIDA SCAN. IS THIS SAFE? WHAT ELSE CAN SHE DO?

Hello,
Though the amount of radiation received by the body during this HIDA scan is small, it is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation. If the hepatic profile tests come out normal, she may be put on anti-emetics and anxiolytics along with parenteral nutrition. If oral diet is allowed, she should try with more of solid and semi-solid diet rather than liquids first thing in the morning, that too, after consuming the anti-emetic medication. Your consultant is the better judge to decide if she is in need of the scan. Hope this helps.
