Is Hydroxyzine Effective In Managing Severe Itching Due To Shingles?

My husband had shingles about 4 weeks ago and he is still itching and hurting very bad in the areas where the shingles were. Someone mentioned he could try Hydroxyzine for the itching and maybe pain too. We don t know where to get some sort of relief for him. Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You can use Calamine lotion or Calosoft lotion on the areas where you have the shingles to ease off the itch. For the pain you could use SOS Paracetamol. It does take time for the itch and the pain of the shingles to settle down completely. Also use a hypoallergic soap for bathing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
