Is Levofloxacin Safe To Take When Diagnosed With Diabetes?

Hello My mother (68 years old) has just been prescribed Levofloxacin for possible pneumonia or upper respiratory infection. (She Just had X-rays taken of her chest a few hours ago and waiting to hear the results.) To get her started, the doctor prescribed an inhaler and antibiotic Levofloxacin 750mg. She is a diabetic and has prior heart conditions as well (stent put in). After reading all of the precautions and side effects, particularly with diabetics and heart conditions, I wanted to ask if you thought this was still a good choice for her. She has a heavy chest now and coughing for about a week, which is why she went to the doctor in the first place. I don t know in her case if the benefits outweigh the risk of this medication for her or if there should be another course of treatment taken first. I would love to know your thoughts. Thank you -Sharon email: YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Considering your mother's symptoms heavy chest, cough for a week, and her other diseases, if she was my patient I would prescribe her Levofloxacine 500 mg for 7 days.
This antibiotic is a very good choice in this case and also the inhaler will help her breathing and improve the O2 saturation level.
I also suggest her to go back to the doctor after 7 days of treatment for a physical examination, to decide if it is needed further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
