Is Macrobid The Right Medicine For Urinary Tract Infection?
Age 74 with UTI that won t go away. Macrobid makes me sick with severe chest and stomach pains with finally vomiting and diarrhea. This occurred approx 14 hrs. After ingesting 1 capsule. Allergic to sulfa and penicillin. Any alternative RX? 1 month ago I suffered through a full regime of Macrobid, then a Z pack. Went finally to urologist he felt my last episode with Macrobid would probably not re-occur again. Culture came back positive and he prescribed Macrobid. Afraid to continue taking this.
Hello, thanks for posting on HCM. Macrobid contains nitrofurantoin which is important drug for treating antibiotics. The side effects of the drugs regarding gastric upset are known to occur. I would suggest you to take pantoprazole 40mg before breakfast in morning and then take your macrobid after food. It will help to reduce the nauseous feeling. If after having 1 or 2 doses of pantoprazole you feel better then kindly complete the course of macrobid as advised to you. But if the side effects continue you can switch your antibiotic to levofloxacin 500mg once a day dose for prescribed time of 5 or 7 days. But it will be recommendable to talk to your doctor about switching the drug as you have already done a culture report and depending whether it is susceptible or resistant to levoflox it will be prescribed. I hope I have answered your query satisfactorily. Thank you
