Is Methergine Effective For An Abortion?
.. good day,. i ask this my problem i confirm that i am pregnant for 4 week.. and me and my boy friend not yet ready to have a baby,.. i take already methergine tablet.. is this affective? i have little blood now came out. i need ur answer please.. thank you,.

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:
Methergine is NOT given or effective for abortion. It is usually given to arrest bleeding only.
Medical abortion should be done by abortion pills under the guidance of gynecologist.
By procedure, at first, you need to take Tab Mifepristone or Mifegest 200mg (ideally 600mg) on D1, after 48 hrs take 2 Tab Misoprostol 200mg in the morning and other 2 tabs need to insert inside vagina under supervision of gynecologist or local doctor.
Never take those medicine by own as may create serious ill health effect like excessive vaginal bleeding etc.
You may need double dose sometimes. Soon after taking Tab Misoprostol, abdominal cramp and vaginal bleeding start within 7 days and next period may be earlier/delayed.
Post pill abortion, you must do a USG lower abdomen to check retained bits/ conceptional products if any and may need D &C to complete abortion.
Practice safe sex by using safe period/OCP/ other methods to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

Methergine is not a medicine meant for aborting a pregnancy. Though Methergine makes the uterus contract, it also closes the mouth of the uterus and hence not a good medicine to terminate the pregnancy.
Instead, Mifepristone and Misoprostol are right medicines to terminate the pregnancy up to 9 weeks of pregnancy. These medicines are not over the counter medicines; they need to be taken in appropriate dosages and schedule. Hence, please contact your Gynaecologist to get the prescription and advice for consuming these medicines.
