Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking losartan 25mg & Norvasc 5mg and I am loosing my hair. Is this a side affect for taking both meds. I have been taken losartan for 5 years but just started on Norvasc in November and my hair started to thin and I have lost 25 pounds. What do I need to do?
I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.
Losartan is an ARB (angiotensin II receptor blocker) used to treat hypertension. The new medication added Norvasc (amlodipine) is a blocker of calcium channels used also to treat hypertension.
The hair lost you are experiencing could be due to Norvasc as this is reported as one of its rare side effects.
However, I need to know if you are also taking any other medications like diuretics, as their use is also associated with hair and weight loss.
I advise to discuss with your primary physician about your actual problems and run further diagnostic tests: - blood electrolytes - complete blood count to rule out anemia - urine analysis - examination of hair to rule out fungal infection
Hope this helps. Dr.Albana
