Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Omnacortil The Correct Medicine For Angioedema?
I am 38 yr old female, who has developed swelling on face for last 1 week. Doctors think it is angioedema. They said it can be only suppressed so that it does not become life threatening. They have asked to take 40mg Omnacortil. Is this correct line of treatment?
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Omnacortil (Prednisolone) is a steroid. Chronic cases of angioedema require steroid therapy, which generally leads to a good response. Systemic glucocorticoids are useful in the management of patients with idiopathic angioedema with or without urticaria. Prednisolone is usually given 40-60 mg /day and then gradually tapered off as the condition improves. Angioedema often is periorbital and in the lips of face. Although self-limited in duration, angioedema of the upper respiratory tract may be life-threatening due to laryngeal obstruction.
