Is Prolixin The Right Medicine For Delusional Disorder?

Hello, I am concerned about my son who is in a mental state hospital for delusional disorder and has been on several medications over the past ten years. They now have put him on Prolixin and he is having major side effects from this medication. They are giving it to him in injection form. How can I talk to his doctors and express my concern without the doctors involved dismissing me as being in denial about my son's illness

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Prolixin is Fluphenazine and the drug is a first generation antipsychotic (FGA) drug and is a good drug but is associated with side effects. Your son has been suffering from psychotic disorder (delusional disorder) since last 10 years. For chronic disorders the drug has been found to be very useful. The drug is given as injectable form so it becomes easy to administer the drug even if patient deny to take the medicines. The drug is safe to use and no need to worry. If he is having restlessness, anxiety and worsening of symptoms with the drug then in my opinion medicines like Trihexyphenidyl, Benzotropin can be used. Even if symptoms doesn't remit then other injectable antipsychotic drug can be used. Risperidon is also available as injectable form as Risperidal Consta and can be tried. The drug is Second generation drug and is tolerated better.

Talk with his doctor for prescription of the drugs I have mentioned.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
