Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband is being evaluated for dementia with halucinations during the night including extreme agitation causing him to jump out of bed to escape whatever is under or in the bed. Confusion, easily frustrated, difficulty following directions during the day. MD has prescribed risperidone 0.25mg one per day at bedtime. Written material from pharmacist says higher chance of death in older adults who take this drug for mental problems caused by dementia . Husband is 75 years old. Should I be uneasy giving this medication to him?
Medications like risperdone are the drug of choice for agitation and confusion in dementia. They can cause a slightly increased risk of stroke and death. On the other hand you have to give your husband medication for his agitation. You doctor also prescribed a very small dose of risperdone. I suggest you continue with this medication.
Kind regards
