Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is UTI A Result Of Malformation In Child's Urinary Tract Or Due To Stopping Medicine Prematurely?
My 7 year old daughter is being treated for frequent urinary tract infections. Her pediatrician decided to put her on Nitrofurantoin 50mg once a day for six months. After 3 months of clear urine cultures I wanted to try and see if she was okay, so I stopped the antibiotic w/o telling the doctor. She got a UTI two weeks later. Is this a symptom that her UTIs are the result of a malformation in her urinary tract or could it be because I didn't follow doctor's instructions and gave her the antibiotic for 6 months.
Recurrent urinary tract infections may be due to anatomy of Urinary tract, which allows bacteria into the bladder easily. If this is the case then proper hygiene of the place should be done regularly.
If despite thorough investigations (such as kidney X-rays and looking into the bladder (cystoscopy), no cause can be found, then patients can be put on a low dose of a safe antibiotic to take non-stop for several months. This keeps their attacks away, and sometimes they never come back. I hope this helps – and don't just continue to put up with it!
