Is Velcade Advisable For Relapsed Patients From Multiple Myeloma?

I have 8 infusions weekly starting on Tuesday after I relapsed from multiple myeloma after having a stem cell transplant only 3 1/2 years ago. I was diagnosed on Nov. 2014 and had 28 rounds and a stem cell transplant to same my life. My therapy drug will be velcade, which is what I used in 2014-15. They told me I had several options, but only gave me velcade. Is this normal for relapsed patients (first relapse).

Hi,

Velcade (bortezomib) is a commonly used medication for the treatment of multiple myeloma, and it is often used in the relapsed setting. It is a type of drug called a proteasome inhibitor, which works by blocking the activity of proteasomes, which are responsible for breaking down proteins in cells. This leads to the accumulation of abnormal proteins in cancer cells, causing them to die.

It is not uncommon for relapsed multiple myeloma patients to receive Velcade as part of their treatment regimen. It is often used in combination with other drugs, such as dexamethasone, to improve its effectiveness.

It is important to note that treatment decisions for relapsed multiple myeloma should be made in consultation with a specialist in multiple myeloma, such as a hematologist or medical oncologist, who can take into account the patient's individual characteristics, including the type and extent of their disease, as well as their overall health and medical history, in order to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
