Is A Big, Hard Lump Below The Knee Cap After A Fall A Cause For Concern?
I tripped over a baby gate about 5 weeks ago and landed on my left knee on a hard laminate floor. Immediately a huge lump rose just below my knee cap. The bruising covered the entire front of my leg from knee to ankle withing 24 hours. I ve had an x-ray which I assume showed nothing as my doctor has not called me back. Now, the bruising is gone but there is still a hard lump about the size of a ping-pong ball below my knee cap. Will it go away on it s own?
Dear patient As you say your Xray is normal chances of fracture is less likely. Since swelling has occurred after trauma it is mostly infrapatellar effusion. It's a collection below knee cap and filled with fluid. I would advise ultrasound of knee to assess amount of fluid. If mount is more than 25ml it needs aspiration. For aspirations you can consult orthopaedic surgeon nearby you.
