Is A Bump Formed With Purple On The Head Cause For Concern?

Hi! My son who is 2 tried to climb out table but slipped and hit the left side of his head on the table. A bump formed with purple in the middle and I put an ice pack on it. He cried for a few minutes but then started playing. It looks bad but should I be worried?

Hello. Thank you for your question. This type of accident is very common in this age group. That he cried immediately and didn't lose consciousness is the most important thing. The bump you describe is a bruise and is expected. You did the right thing by applying ice. However, it will still last a few days before it goes away. It is of no concern and shouldn't worry you. The next most important sign to watch for is vomiting within the first 24 hours after the fall. As long as this doesn't happen, there is nothing to worry about.
