Is A Cardiac Catheterization Advisable While Suffering With Pneumonia?

My 86 year old Dad is going thru a cardiac catheterization today. He has never had any sign of heart issues before a mild heart attack a few weeks ago. He does however have what a Dr said is a 65-75% blocked carotid artery. Is this going to be a very risky procedure based on his age and health. He also has pneumonia at the moment. My Dad is in Texas - I am in NH - it is hard to get all the facts this far away.

Hi. welcome to 'Ask A Doctor service' . i have read your question and here is my advice.
Cardiac characterization is not a very complicated procedures and is done as day case most of the times, this is very safely done most of the times on older people . So i hopes this would be not a big deal for even an 86 years old.
What ever her age and health condition , this would be assessed in detail by the doctor doing it , so if he was unfit no one would be doing it but most of the times it can performed .This procedure is done without general anesthesia.

Hopes i have answered your question. I will be delighted to answer any further queries regarding this issue.

Regards
Dr Rahman
