Is A Non-contrast Pelvic MRI Sufficient To Recheck Post-appendix Removal Pain?
Hello, Post appendix removal x 3 months with some pain in the area now presenting. Will an MRI no contrast pelvis be sufficient to recheck this area? My provider wants to do CT contrast or MRI contrast and both come with risks ( gadolinium deposits vs radiation repeat for the year ). I am 30 yoa
Yes, there are contrast risks (gadolinium retention in kidneys or brain) in CT with contrast and radiation exposure and contrast risks (kidney issues, allergies) in MRI with contrast. Since you are experiencing pain 3 months post-appendicectomy, it is important to find the cause of such a manifestation. Commonly, it may be due to nerve-related pain (post-surgical neuropathy); it can be treated with medicines.
Over time it gets better. If it is due to incisional hernia, it may be confirmed by ultrasound. Post-surgical adhesions (scar tissue) can be detected with CT without contrast. Consult your treating doctor so as to go for investigations (without contrast). If required, then only he may go for a CT or MRI with contrast. Investigations without contrast may miss detecting abscesses and soft tissue evaluation and inflammation.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
