Is A Surgery For Diverticulosis Advisable In An Elderly Patient?

I am a lady 84 years old and have diverticulosis. My doctor wants to perform surgery, because I already tried ointments and suppositories, but nothing seems to help the burning and hurts when I sit down. Are there other procedures not so invasive and should I try the surgery at my age? I am healthy otherwise. Thank you very much for your help.

Hello,

Treatment of diverticulitis is mainly by providing suitable and high fibers containing diets with probiotics . Surgery could be decided due to multiple attacks of diverticulitis, severe pain, and failure of conservative treatment. This will relieve your symptoms if performed by the experienced surgeon.

Your consulting doctor would do the best treatment for you based on the scenario.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Abed Tahrawi
