My sister had an ultrasound of her thyroid the other day. She came home with these results. Please help me interpret these to her. Multiple transverse and longitudinal scan of the thyroid gland was obtained. Both lobes are normal in size Multiple transverse and longitudinal scan of the thyroid gland was obtained. Both lobes are normal in size and echo pattern with inhomogeneous parenchyma. The right lobe measures 4.4 x 1.2 x 1.5 cm The left lobe measures 4.0 x 0.9 x 1.8 cm A hypoechoic nodule is seen in the lower pole of the left lobe measuring 0.3 x 0.2 x 0.3 cm No solid or cystic nodules noted in the right lobe. Isthmus is unremarkable Impression: NORMAL SIZED THYROID WITH DIFFUSE PARENCHYMAL CHANGES AND NODULE IN THE LEFT LOBE echo pattern with inhomogeneous parenchyma. Isthmus is unremarkable Impression: NORMAL SIZED THYROID WITH DIFFUSE PARENCHYMAL CHANGES AND NODULE IN THE LEFT LOBE. Thanks so much!
In case of cysts or nodules in thyroid means it is called inhomogeneous thyroid. Parenchymal changes may be due to edema or infiltration of gland seen subacute thyroiditis or viral thyroiditis.
Next step is you have to check nodule malignant or benign by FNAC and radio thyroid scan. Also check for thyroid profile and thyroid peroxidase level then consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.
