Is A Whole Eye And Corneal Transplantation Possible?
is a whole eye transplant possible? As much as i know one of my relatives has a whole eye transplant but am now growing curious about it. Why? because as i have been researching about it through web, i was not able to get enough articles on it. i am doing a research project on whole eye and corneal transplantation for schooling purpose but am failing to get enough info on it. it would be great if you could send me some info on it.
The whole eye transplant is not possible because the optic nerve once cut and damaged cannot
regenerate. However different parts of the eyes can be utilized once it is donated.
Like - the cornea which is used the most for transplant,
- the sclera for ptosis (upper lid drooping) correction surgeries.
- recently, the retinal transplants for macular dysfunction is under research
- and the rest ,for research purposes depending on the condition of the tissue removed.
Whole eye transplant is still under research due to optic nerve involvement.
