Is Abdominal Pain And Fever An Irritation That Will Correct Itself Or Should I Be More Concerned?

In my 20 s i had a few bouts of heavy mucus in my stools but was never diagnosed with anything. Now in my early 50 s I was diagnosed with divertiticulitis a few years back. I generally manage it by keeping things flowing. If i get even slightly constipated i usually have abdominal pain - i usually change my diet to high fiber and it clears itself up. This happen recently. I used an over-the-counter liquid laxitive (which i use rarely) as the pain seemed more severe. I had a high fever in the night. I m feeling better and ate a meal of pasta with ground chicken and mushrooms. My decending colon has pain to touch. Is this just an irritation that will correct itself or should i be more concerned?

If you are having fever, left lower abdominal pain, and have a history of diverticulitis as you describe, then you could definitely be having a recurrence. It is good that you are feeling better now and are tolerating food.

If you develop another fever, or your pain gets worse, I suggest making an appointment to see your doctor. Not all diverticulitis needs to be treated in the hospital. If you catch it early, your doctor may be able to just give you antibiotics and let you ride it out at home. Good luck!
