an acute myocardial infarction is a heart attack that happens suddenly. You can say I had an acute myocardial infarction, but no it does not go on forever like a disease process. A myocardial infarction means a portion of the heart muscle has died from lack of oxygenation to the tissue. This damaged part does not ever return to normal. A small infarct can eventually get larger if the underlying problem is not corrected and a person will often have continues ischemia........meaning more of the heart muscle will be damaged or will be painful due to lack of oxygenation. But the word acute means immediate. It does not indicate a chronic and ongoing attack. If a person were to walk around having continual acute myocardial infarction they would not live very long, and they would be in severe pain etc. etc.
